MONDAY’S HEADLINES

TROY POLAMALU SNAGS TOP DEFENSIVE HONOR
The Steelers’ strong safety won a well deserved Defensive Player of the Year Award this year for his outstanding efforts on the field for the Black and Gold. Polamalu led the team with seven interceptions and caused nine turnovers in 2010. Without question Polamalu is the heart and soul of the secondary and one of the defenses big impact players. When Polamalu is healthy and in the lineup the Steelers’ defense is a much more effective unit. The former Trojan adds this award to an already impressive resume that includes six Pro Bowls and two first-team All-Pro selections. While there might be some contention with Polamalu receiving this award over Packer’s linebacker Clay Matthews Jr (who many thought had won the award), it’s hard to argue against his deserving the award; 63 total tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, 7 interceptions, one defensive touchdown scored and he is one of the teams’ key players that helped lead the league’s overall number two ranked defense in 2010.

THE STEELERS COULD BE MISSING A FEW NOTABLES
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, there are multiple sources reporting that the Steelers will be without both defensive end Aaron Smith (triceps) and center Maurkice Pouncey (ankle) for Super Bowl Sunday. While this really comes as little surprise to anyone, Pouncey’s absence could play more of a significant on Sunday. With Smith out defensive lineman Ziggy Hood will continue in his role as the starter and provide the strong play the team has become accustomed to. With Pouncey out Doug Legursky would start at center and face a steep challenge going up against the Packers and Dom Caper’s exotic pass rush scheme. Legursky filled in admirably against the Jets in the AFC Championship, but on Sunday he’ll face one of the leagues fiercest pass rush, second only to the Steel Curtain; this will be a matchup to watch.

PACKERS FACING SOME DISTRACTIONS BEFORE SUPER SUNDAY
It’s really hardly a distraction, but it seems to be quite entertaining to see all the attention and fuss that is being made about a few tweets on Twitter from some of the Packers regarding their team photo. What is amazing is how something as simple as a tweet can be spun into a story or even anything worth taking up a few breaths at the watercooler. As this so-called story has been followed, it appears all of the Packers in question have now made nice and there really shouldn’t be anything worth bringing up as both teams now prepare for Sunday. If anything, the Packers might want to use the fact that in some people’s eyes Clay Matthews Jr was snubbed out of the DPOY award and use that as locker room material.

Pro Bowl Weekend

DeAngelo Hall Earn the MVP Award...
It was an entertaining Pro Bowl game to watch for those that were interested. With all of the scoring (96 combined points scored) there had to be someone selected to receive the award and why not the Redskins De Angelo Hall. Hall picked off Philip Rivers, recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Hall also finished the game tied for the team lead with six tackles in a game that lacked a lot of defense. Hall earned his third Pro Bowl appearance on the strength of his six interceptions in 2010.

Zorn Fired in Baltimore….
The Ravens made the move last week firing quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn which comes as a surprise to me considering how well Joe Flacco played this past season and how successful the Ravens were (12 regular season wins). Flacco did not sound very pleased with the move and you have to wonder if it will have any kind of detrimental effect down the road. Flacco set career highs in yards passing (3,622), touchdowns (25), and passer rating 93.6 under Zorn’s tutelage; obviously there must have been control issues within the Harbaugh regime to feel it necessary to make this change. With what Zorn was able to accomplish with Flacco this past season, he’s not likely to remain unemployed too long.

Titans Part Ways With Fischer ….
It was a volatile situation earlier in the season between head coach Jeff Fischer and his quarterback Vince Young. From that point you had a feeling one of them would not be returning in 2011, but when word came down that the team would not retain Young it sounded like Fischer would continue on the Titan’s sideline where he has been for the past 16 seasons. Fischer’s departure came as a surprise, but in the scheme of things following the fiasco with Young, the disappointing 2010 season, and some of the internal struggles with the coaching changes being made, a split and fresh start seems most logical for both parties.

Kolb “Trade Talk” Heating Up?....
According to Adam Schefter there seems to be at least the possibility that the Eagles could trade Kolb for a high draft selection. It would make sense for the Eagles to at least field some offers; with Vick (age 30) their starter for the next several years, Kolb does carry some trade value weight, especially if the team can get a first or second round pick.

Tomlinson Could Be A Jet in 2011….
It sounds like the Jets have every intention of retaining LT’s services for 2011. Although he wasn’t much of a factor in the AFC Championship, he is coming off a very good 2010 campaign (1,282 total yards, 6 rushing touchdowns) and still has plenty in his tank. He biggest contribution to Jets is his leadership which will help 2nd year running back Shonn Greene (the future of the Jets ground attack).

Could Burress Land Somewhere in 2011?….
The former Giant was a head case in New York long before he shot himself, even when he is eligible to make his return the game he not likely to see many callers. Burress is going to have to prove himself to the league, his best chances of latching on somewhere in 2011 could come mid-season when a team could be in need due to injuries.

FRIDAY FOOTBALL FIXX

Friday’s Football Fixx

Who Will Win on Super Sunday?
Bold predictions can sometimes become boring clichés fast, but that doesn’t mean we tire from hearing them and on that note I would like to offer a few thoughts on the big dance set to take stage in just over a week. The Packers and Steelers have traveled very different roads to get to Dallas, but both have used very similar blue prints to find their way; a big armed quarterback, a suffocating pass rush, and playmakers all around.

The Packers boast the next up and coming elite quarterback in the game with Aaron Rodgers. Finally out of the shadow of a legend, Rodgers is paving his way to his own history. In the post season he has looked as good as any other under center completing better than 70 percent of his throws, averaging 263 yards per game, and accounting for eight touchdowns (6 pass, 2 run). His counterpart, Big Ben (Roethlisberger) has not been quite the highlight reel this post season, but his resume has been well documented; 10-2 record in the post season, one of the highest regular season winning percentages as a starter, and his third appearance in the Super Bowl. Both will lead offenses very capable of lighting up the score board in a hurry.

The Packers were only 10th in scoring this past season, but they did rank 5th in passing and will undoubtedly stick to their guns on the big stage. The Steelers

Can the Defenses Dominate on the Big Stage?

Super Bowl XLV should plenty filled with lots of fireworks from both offenses, but don’t think for a moment there will be an absence of defense. The Steelers finished the regular season with the 2nd ranked defense overall (1st in scoring), while the Packers ranked 5th overall and second in scoring. The Steel Curtain had plenty of stars on the defense with players like James Harrison (10.5 sacks), LaMarr Woodley (10 sacks), and Troy Polamalu (7 interceptions).

The Packers also have plenty of stars on defense to boast of as well with players like Charles Woodson (5 forced fumbles), Clay Matthews Jr (13.5 sacks), and Cullen Jenkins (7 sacks). Both defenses face monumental tasks of trying to stop the opposing offenses, but each should some level of success. The Packers are going to bring plenty of heat and count on Big Ben to hold onto the ball longer trying to make a play downfield, while the Steelers defense will limit the Packers ground game so they can turn their dogs loose on the edge to get after Rodgers.

This matchup has the makings of being something great and the evidence is readily available to view; their matchup in December 2009 is a screaming example. Both teams will be exchanging haymakers and thunderbolts on Super Sunday, but which team will land the biggest blow and take the biggest prize?

This one may be too close to call, but like their previous meeting this one could simply come down to who has the ball last.

Injury News and Updates for Super Sunday

The Steelers will likely be without defensive end Aaron Smith (triceps) who is still ailing from his injury according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The team had refrained from placing him on the injured reserve in hopes he could be ready for the Super Bowl (if they had made it), but the prospect looks improbable at best now.

The word on offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey has not changed much; he suffered a sprained ankle in the AFC Championship and appears to be dealing with a broken bone in the ankle as well. His status appears to be in serious doubt and would be huge blow to the “O” line.

The Packers appear to be in good health leading up to Super Sunday with just a few players getting some rest; Greg Jennings (knee) was listed as limited, but appears to be fine and just resting up for the big dance on February 6th.

Just my views.

Notes Leading Up To Super Sunday

Pouncey will not Play in Super Bowl?...
According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Reivew the Steelers will be without their All-Pro rookie center Maurkice Pouncey. The rookie severely injured his left ankle in the AFC Championship and was sporting crutches with a hard cast on Wednesday. Pouncey has been an anchor on the Steeler’s offensive line this season and his absence in the second half against the Jets was more than noticeable; the Steelers ground attack all but disappeared in the second half. This could be a big problem for the Steelers as they get ready to face Dom Caper’s “Psycho” defense. Without Pouncey, if the Steelers ground game stalls, Big Ben could be running for his life on Super Sunday.

Aaron Smith Could be Ready for Super Sunday…
The Steelers could be welcoming back their defensive end Aaron Smith on Super Bowl Sunday. Smith suffered a triceps injury back in week seven that has had him sidelined since, but his recent attempts to practice are a great indication that he could be back. Smith’s return would be a lift for the Steelers run defense and much needed against the Packers ground game that has played well this post season.

The Steel Curtain to Keep it’s Mentor ….
Defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau quickly dispelled rumors that he could be leaving the steel town for another DC job. ESPN recently suggested that LeBeau could leave for another opening in the NFL, but LeBeau told the NFL Network “they’ll have to run me out of here.” Whether or not this should be taken to heart, it was a good move to deflect any possible distraction from the task at hand; trying to stop Aaron Rodgers and the Packers vaunted passing attack. Once business has concluded, it would be interesting to see if LeBeau’s stance might change, but at 73 would he consider another DC job or might there be a head coaching job somewhere in his future?

Did Rodgers suffer a Third Concussion?...
While it is not being debated there is good cause and some questionable evidence to suggest that the Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was a little dinged up and may have suffered another concussion (his third this season) against the Bears during the NFC Champiohship. There are some suggesting that Rodgers did not look as sharp following the helmet-to-helmet hit from defensive end Julius Peppers that he suffered in the 4th quarter. If Rodgers was a little dazed and made it through the game fine so be it, but the real concern for Green Bay will be protecting their quarterback from any big hits on Super Sunday by the Steelers Blitz-burgh defense.

TUESDAY FOOTBALL NOTES

January 25th, 2011 Tuesday
Tuesday’s Football Notes

Packers Complete the Road Trifecta
The Packers stormed into the windy city on Sunday having won their previous two post season matchups on the road and looking for the trifecta sweep. It was not a pretty win for Green Bay , but Aaron Rodgers and the Packers managed to hold off the Bears late second half rally. The win was secured largely due to the play of the game, a 18 yard interception and return for a touchdown by the Packers defensive lineman B.J. Raji. This was the second time in about a month that the Packers had defeated the Bears and now they will face the Steelers on Super Bowl Sunday. The Cheesehead road warriors have now ran off five straight wins, defeating the Bears twice, the Giants, Falcons, and Eagles. A win on Super Sunday would complete what has been a remarkable run for Rodgers and company; one that actually started some three plus seasons ago on September 8th, 2008 when Rodgers first took the snap under center as the Packers new starting quarterback.

Roethlisberger Gets Knocked Around But Not Down
The Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was knocked around pretty good on Sunday against the Jets defense. In the early moments of the first quarter Big Ben took a hard shot in the thigh area from Jets lineback Calvin Pace. He came up limping pretty noticeably and it had to be an early concern for the Steelers coaching staff; part of Ben’s effectiveness is his mobility and ability to stretch the play. Sunday’s matchup with the Jets was anything, but pretty with both defenses makes plays to keep this contest close. It was the Steelers defense early with a sack, forced fumble and return for a touchdown dictating action, but in the second half the Jets defense seemed to stiffen up, coming up with two picks and forcing a safety mid-way through the 4th quarter. Big Ben took his licks, but despite the early injury he continued to play well enough to pick up needed first downs, chew clock, and in the game’s most critical moment make the play of the game with a short pass to rookie wide receiver Aaron Brown to gain the needed first down to run out the clock. Big Ben’s injury did not appear to be serious as he was able to play the rest of the game with no visible setbacks. With two weeks the Steelers quarterback should be healthy and ready to evade the Packers pass rush on Super Sunday; evade it as well as anyone can be expected.

This Could Be a Rematch for the Ages
The Steelers and the Packers; why does that sound so sweet and what is so familiar and enticing about this matchup anyway? Maybe it’s because we have seen this act once before and with the second act set to take place on the world’s largest stage how can we not anticipate greatest beyond imagination. Two historic franchises with a winning culture and nine Super Bowl trophies combined, how can anyone expect anything less than a spectacular Super-ridiculous matchup on Super Bowl Sunday? What makes this matchup so surreal, for most of the football world that follows this game with dedication and passion, we have already seen these two Goliaths battle once before and the result; one of the greatest games played in recent history. Last year the Packers and Steelers lined up on Heinz Field and did battle like two gladiators fighting for a kingdom and locked in a death-match. It was no-holds barred as these two squared off throwing hay-makers one after another. Both teams would total over 70 points and rack up 973 net yards of offense, with the final play in regulation deciding the outcome. Needless to say, the Steelers prevailed 37-36 on Big Ben’s 19 yard touchdown pass to Mike Wallace (the extra point was necessary to secure the win). It was a matchup for the ages that has gone down in the history books (and one you can catch on the NFL Network) as one of the greatest games ever played and in less than two weeks, these two teams get to do it again for the largest prize; the Lombardi Trophy. Get ready for Super Sunday, it should be a great one!

Championship Week

Championship Sunday Will Be Chilly...
With all that is at stake and this time of year, should anyone really be surprised with sub-zero temperatures on the gridiron on Sunday? Okay, maybe it won’t be quite that cold (close with the wind-chill), but the forecast is calling for chilly weather for both title games. It’s going to take a lot more than a little cold to cool down the Packers red-hot Aaron Rodgers and it may be just fitting for some cold-steel defense in Pittsburgh.

Both Harris and Ellis Expected to Play
Both Bears safety Chris Harris (hip injury) and Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis (knee injury) expect to play on Sunday in their respective title match. Ellis sat out of practice on Friday, but Rex says he’ll play Sunday. It’s a similar situation in Chicago with Harris who was limited Friday. Ellis will be a key for the Jets if they hope to get any pressure on Big Ben and Harris will be needed in secondary as they try to slow down Rodgers and the Packers passing attack.

Haynesworth Wants to Play?….
It’s funny to hear that Haynesworth wants to play anywhere after watching his disappointing 2010 season in which it appeared he didn’t even want to play. The recent rumor has him eyeing Philly, but I’m not sure that I would be interested in a player that is not willing to work hard; true or not that’s the impression Haynesworth has left some. If he wants to play, he could be a great fit as the Eagles need bulk inside to stuff the run.

Stafford has Shoulder Surgery….
Now this is no surprise considering all the shoulder trouble this your arm has had in his short career. This was Stafford’s second surgery after just two seasons, and while the prognosis is positive there must be some concern with the frequency of injury to his throwing shoulder. Stafford was starting to show great improvement this season with six touchdowns and just one pick in three games, but he needs to show more durability if he’s going to be the franchise quarterback the Lions thought they drafted.

Alex Smith Back in Frisco?...
After six seasons of pretty much going nowhere, it’s really time for the Niners and Smith to part ways. Smith has languished in mediocrity as a starter and backup in San Francisco for the past six seasons, with 51 touchdowns and 53 interceptions he has never quite blossomed into the signal caller the Niners had hoped when they used their first round (overall number one) pick in the 2005 draft. The experiment is over and it’s time for change, with a new era, a new head coach, and a new quarterback.

No Contact with Champ….
It doesn’t sound like the Broncos are too interested in making any sudden moves to re-sign the shut-down corner Champ Bailey, who enjoyed another solid season. The Broncos are making many changes and could be looking for remake the defense entirely. The first sounds would suggest no Bailey in Denver for 2011, but until a new CBA agreement gets done, I would think it’s too early to rule anything out.

FRIDAY FOOTBALL FIXX

January 21st, 2011 Friday
Friday’s Football Fixx

Packers Look Like A Real Favorite On Sunday
The Bears may have won the North Division, they may have beaten Seattle last week, and they may have defeated the Packers here (at Soldier Field) weeks ago (back in Week 3), but the way the Cheeseheads are playing right now it’s very difficult to not consider them the favorites on Sunday. And while the Bears have every right to feel confident about their matchup at home this Sunday, who could blame there for questioning their own chances. Afterall, the Packers will enter Sunday without a doubt the hottest quarterback in the league; Aaron Rodgers is completing near 80 percent of his throws in the playoffs and has six touchdown passes and not interceptions. The Monsters of the Midway have played impressive defense much of the season, but what they face this Sunday could be one of the most lethal wide receiving corps this league has seen since the “Greatest Show On Turf” days (and remember, I said could); Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones, and Jordy Nelson (Jones and Nelson could easily start on a number of teams). While the Bears will face a monument of a task in trying to stop Rodgers and company, Jay Cutler and his Bears offense could be on the receiving end of several big hits. In two games against the Packers defense led by linebacker Clay Matthews Jr. and cornerback Charles Woodson, Cutler has been sacked nine times and intercepted three. The Bears may be at home, but they might not like the smell of what the Packers are cooking.

Can the (Rex) Ryan Express Fly through Steel
It’s been almost like a Hollywood script or more like an episode out of “Hardknocks” on HBO watching the Jets overcome and defy odds to reach the pinnacle of the AFC race to Dallas (Super Bowl XVL). With the two final teams representing the AFC (Jets and Steelers) ready to square off on Sunday, the ending could be less than climatic for head coach Rex Ryan and company. While he and his Jets have been riding a feverish wave of momentum with wins over the Colts and Patriots, one can not helped but point out one glaring fact; they have not seen a defense like this. Both the Patriots (defense ranked 25th overall) and Colts (defense ranked 20th overall) were worthy opponents in their own right, but with defenses ranked in the bottom half the Jets offense was able to dictate tempo and play their game. These two teams have played before, just six weeks ago in the Steelers own backyard with the Jets coming out on top. It’s not to say they were lucky, they earned the win, but as the old saying goes “any given Sunday.” There is a colossal difference in this matchup however, this is the AFC Championship, the Steelers have been here and Rex’s young quarterback Mark Sanchez has only played in one; the Steeler’s quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be making his fourth start. The Steelers boast the 2nd ranked defense overall and led the NFL with 48 sacks this season. In their first matchup the Steel Curtain only got to Sanchez once, something they are certain to improve on Sunday. Ryan and company may be hoping for clear sailing on Sunday, but when they take Heinz field all they may find is cold steel.

Injury News and Updates

The Bears are as healthy as they can expect as this juncture of the season with the only notable injury being safety Chris Harris (hip). According to head coach Lovie Smith he anticipates Harris playing Sunday in the NFC Championship.

The Jets were down a man last Sunday against the Patriots with kick-return specialist/wide receiver Brad Smith sidelined with a groin injury, but according to ESPN, he is expected to serve as the teams’ kick returner in the AFC Championship.

The Jets starting shutdown corner Darelle Revis was limited in practice on Thursday, but returned as a full-participant on Friday. Revis is fully expected to start on Sunday without any concerns and will likely draw the assignment of covering the Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward.

Just my views.

Championship Week

Rams Hire Josh McDaniels...
The Rams have added former Bronco’s head coach Josh McDaniels to their staff. McDaniels will take over as the team’s Offensive Coordinator. I have little doubt this was not only the right move, but also the best move for both parties. What makes this work, offense was the Rams Achilles this season (ranked 26th in yards, 26th in scoring) and their new OC will bring some young creative intuitiveness to the picture. McDaniels tenure in Denver did not exactly end on the best note (fired during the season), but now with a fresh start in St. Louis and huge canvas to work with (Bradford, Jackson, Avery, & Clayton) he’ll have an opportunity to re-invent himself. When McDaniels arrived in Denver he brought a track record that would suggest an improvement on offense. In both New England and Denver there was great evidence of his genius, but he made have enjoyed greater success in the Mile High city had he not got rid of some of his best talent. To his credit he was still able to produce much with less and in St. Louis he could be starting with a bit more than what he had in Denver. With a young arm with great potential under center, an All-Pro running back in the backfield, and some great young, but unproven talent wide receiver; leave it to McDaniels to elevate the play of this offense and some of its players like Donnie Avery, Mark Clayton, and Danario Alexander.

Favre Done For Good?...
It was announced this week that Vikings quarterback Brett Favre had filed his retirement papers for a second time (the first time when he was in Green Bay). This is not shocking news to most as they will more than likely scrutinize the legend for being indecisive with this decision in the past. Thankfully he was. 2010 may not have resulted in the ending he was hoping for, but it was a fine example of Brett being the person and player he has always been; the same guy that came back after a dismal return to New York in 2008, when folks said he was done and should hang em up. Had Brett not stuck to his guns and returned after his stint in the Big Apple we would have never seen the magic he brought many of us football fans in 2009. If this is finally it, then let me bet among the first and many to say, thank you Brett “thanks for all the memories” you will be missed on Sundays, but I am pretty sure never forgotten for what you brought to the game; your passion for the game and an undying will to compete.

Packers-Bears Reviving Old Rivalry….
It may be the oldest rivalry in the league, but it is by far the dullest. Incredibly on Sunday the Packers and Bears will meet in the post season for the first time since December of 1941, one week after the Pearl Harbor bombing. With the two teams splitting their two meetings this season (both winning at home) Sunday’s matchup should be a classic in what has been one of the leagues greatest rivalries. Between the two teams there has been 21 NFL titles won, 12 conference Titles combined, and 31 divisional Titles captured. If you don’t believe that each of these teams understands not only their own history, but the history of this rivalry you are just not paying attention. Quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler represent the past, present, and certainly the future of two great franchises that have brought football fans endless memories of excitement and you can be sure they will have plenty more to bring on Sunday. With a bid to the Super Bowl at stake, it’s pretty safe to say that both Rodgers and Cutler will be leaving it all on the field on Sunday as each tries to reach the big dance for the first time.

The Bears lead to overall series 92-83-6.

MONDAY NIGHT HEADLINES

January 17th, 2011 Monday
Monday’s Headlines

Rodgers And Packers Taking Their Road Show To Chi-Town
On Sunday it was anything but a competitive matchup; the Packers jumped on the Falcons early and put this one to bed quick. The back-breaker came just before the half when cornerback Tramon Williams picked off Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and returned it 70 yards for the score. The pick six came with just 10 seconds left in the half and pretty much took all the wind out of the Falcons sails (and there wasn’t much already trailing). With a halftime lead of 28-14 and getting the ball to start the second half, Aaron Rodgers and company wasted little time removing all doubt. This time it would be Rodgers who would add the exclamation point on a 12 play drive with a 7-yards scramble for six. The touchdown gave the Packers an insurmountable 35-14 lead and epitomized the play of Rodgers not just throughout the playoffs, but much of his 2010 campaign. Rodgers has been playing brilliantly all season, but just when you thought he could not play any better he has elevated his play to epic proportions. Since returning from his concussion in week 16 all Rodgers has done is defeat the Giants, Bears, Eagles, and Falcons (teams with a combined regular season record of 44-20). How he has done this; Rodgers has averaged 294 yards passing per game, with 11 touchdowns (including six in the playoffs), and just one pick. More impressively Rodgers and the Packers have won their last two straight on the road. This week they are on the road once again traveling to the Windy City hoping the show will go on; in two meetings with the Bears this season Rodgers has passed for over 500 yards, but has only two touchdowns.

Jets Spread Their Wings And Fly Past Patriots
Did no one see this coming? Maybe there were a few that sensed something big could be on the horizon, but really who believed the Jets would fly into Foxboro and dominate? That was the game that I saw; Tom Brady and the Patriots offense looked out of rhythm and ineffective most of the afternoon, while the Jets defense (5 sacks) had their way keeping Brady on his heels. While this game may have been hyped-up to be all about Rex (Ryan) versus Bill (Belichick), it came down to the two quarterbacks against the opposing defenses. This was one matchup where no one was talking about or expecting much from Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, but in what Rex described as “one of the biggest games in Jets history” Sanchez showed up and delivered. The former Trojan was composed all afternoon under center and in the pocket making sharp throw after throw; Sanchez passed for 194 yards on 16 of 25 passing and threw three touchdowns to lead Gang Green. It was one of his best and most impressive performances of his young career, he was sharp, took care of the ball, and was a perfect complement to the Jets running attack; Sanchez finished the game with a 127.3 passer rating (his highest all year). Next week he’ll face a Steeler’s defense that he and the Jets defeated 22-17 back in week 15. As long as the forecast at Heinz Field does not call for inclement weather, Sanchez and Jets should have good visibility for flying on Sunday.

Mora Could Be An Interesting Add in Denver
Just on a side note, I think Jim Mora Jr would be a great fit in Denver. The Bronco’s defense has been suffering for a lot of years and maybe Mora doesn’t have quite the proven track record as a defensive coordinator, but I believe he’s a football guy with a lot of passion for his craft. I also believe he could be the right guy in Denver. The regime being led by John Elway has already taken a positive step in the hiring of John Fox. Like Fox, Mora can bring some of those same intangibles that this franchise is missing and needs; passion, fire, a fresh start. The defense has been through so many changes, but by bringing in a name like Mora the thought is maybe the team will stay with the program long enough to give it a chance to succeed. Right now Mora appears to be interested in the job (this according to NFL Network), but there is no certainty what direction the team will go or if Mora might take another offer. If the Broncos can sign Mora on as the defensive coordinator; not be a couple of bad moves by Elway, Fox, then Mora.

LAST MINUTE TAKES

Last Minute Takes

Seahawks-Bears Matchup

This matchup could simply come down to one thing; which team can run the ball. The Bears have been playing exceptionally well this season, especially since the team has found more of a balanced attack.

Running back Matt Forte will be a huge factor in the Bears success today, something that he wasn’t in the first matchup since the team decided to settle with the pass (45 pass plays, 14 run plays). In today’s contest, the number of carries Forte sees will be direct portion to how successful the Bears will be; the more he runs, the better Chicago does.

On the other side, it will be paramount that running back MArshawn Lynch and Seahawks sustain some kind of run game today.; even if they can’t gobble up huge yards, as long as the Seahawks can stay away from obvious passing situations quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and the passing game can have success. The Bears don’t have a formidable four man rush and will have to blitz to get pressure. It will be a daunting task for Lynch and company to grind out some effective yards today; Bears finished the season ranked second against the run.

The Seahawks have had a nice run, but in the windy city their hopes and dreams of reaching the NFC Championship may just get blown away by a Bears teams looking to take their next step to greater heights.

My pick; Bears

Jets-Patriots Matchup

I must admit that I love head coach Rex Ryan’s cavalier attitude and swagger, but unfortunately he can’t use it on the field today. He’s going up against one of the best masterminds on the gridiron today. Ryan and company have been here before, but they have never met an opponent on such a roll as the one the Patriots are on.

During their eight game winning streak the Patriots scored more than 30 points in all eight. The more impressive stat about the Patrtiots winning streak is their lists of opponents that they rolled through on the way to winning eight; Steelers, Colts, Jets, Bears, and Packers.

Quarterback Tom Brady has been scintillating this season and near perfect with 36 passing touchdowns, just four interceptions, and a passer rating of 111.0. The Patriots (14-2) have looked unstoppable at times and near perfect this season. If the Jets are going to hope for the near impossible, it will take a colossal effort; the Jets will need to be perfect today.

This matchup may look one sided on paper and after all the hype, but the one thing to remember, the Jets have beaten the Patriots this season; they will need to play even better today than they did in week 2 to come out with a win in Foxboro today.

My Pick; Patriots

Just my take.

The Ravens and Steelers split their two matchups this season with each team win on the others field, but in the series since Joe Flacco has been under center for Baltimore the Steelers own a 5-2 record.

The key for the Ravens will be pass protection; Flacco was sacked four times the last time these two teams got together. It’s going to be a tall order to run the ball against the Steelers number one rated run defense, but the Ravens must find ways to get the ball into the hands of Ray Rice. In their last meeting the Ravens offense ran the ball just 20 times and passed the ball 37 times. They will need better balance today if they hope to protect Flacco from the Steeler’s pass rush and playmakers; James Harrison (10.5 sacks), LaMarr Woodley (10 sacks) and Troy Polamalu (7 interceptions).

When they do have to throw the ball, wide receiver Derrick Mason could come up big with the secondary keying on Boldin and Heap (1o catches last weekend against the Chiefs). Flacco will have to use all of his weapons and still try to get the ball downfield to challenge the Steelers deep, but Mason could be the answer for a couple of key third downs and in the red-zone.

The Steelers would like to dictate this affair very much like the last time these two teams squared off, but 13 points may not be enough to secure the win today. The Steelers finished the year 11th in rushing and would like nothing better than to grind out big yardage against the nasty Ravens defense. Big Ben (Roethlisberger) has the knack of improvising, give him a solid ground attack and he can be even more dangerous with play-action roll outs.

The Steelers figure to give the run game every opportunity to succeed, but they won’t be afraid to let Big Ben drop back and chuck the rock. In one game this season against the Ravens, Roethlisberger passed for 253 yards with a touchdown. Big Ben could be the key for the Steelers, he may have to make a few plays today if they hope to generate enough points to win.

The real difference today will come down to which team will force the other into making mistakes; the Steelers look to have the edge with one of the leagues most lethal pass rushes (48 sacks led the league). Look for a ton of pressure, some errant throws, and keep your eye on Polamalu.

My pick; Steelers

Packers-Falcons Matchup

This matchup has the look and feel of every fantasy football owners dream come true; big time playmakers, lots of yards, and lots of points. In their first go round it was the Packers that provided most of the big plays racking up 418 yards of offense, but it was the Falcons that made the loudest noise scoring the most points and taking the game.

The keys for the Packers, or what hurt them was coming up with just 17 points on four trips into the red-zone. The Falcons in some ways may have been fortunate to hold on for the win, but then again with a 7-1 record at home this season and 20-4 over the past three season, the Falcons know how to win at home.

Rodgers was able to hit his targets and had a lot of success in the air, which will be key today. If the Falcons are going to disrupt the Packers offense they will have to do a better job of bringing pressure (only one sack in the first matchup).

The Packers are going to do their best to slow down defensive end John Abraham and the Falcons pass rush with their new found running game. Last week against the Eagles defense rookie running back James Starks had lots of success gaining over 120 yards on the ground.

For the Falcons, they will need another cool-under-pressure game from quarterback Matty “Ice” Ryan. Ryan completed over 62 percent of his throws this season and tossed 28 touchdowns with just nine picks. To take some pressure off the three year starter, the Falcons will lean heavily on their 1,300-yard rusher Michael Turner. In their first meeting Turner rolled his way through the defense for 110 yards and a touchdown.

These two teams have not seen a lot of each other in the past (just twice since Ryan arrived in Atlanta) and they last met nearly two months ago, but each is going to do what it is they like to do Packers-pass, Falcons-run). What we will see will be a matchup that will transpire into a game that will take on the familiar shape of what we saw back in week 12. In that game these two teams combined for 37 points, today they may reach that mark at halftime.

If this game becomes a horse race, the Packers just may have the thoroughbreds needed to outlast the Falcons on the back stretch.

My Pick; Packers

Just my take.

FRIDAY FOOTBALL FIXX

January 14th, 2011 Friday
Friday’s Football Fixx

Seahawks Are Not Down and Far From Out
Sure it’s easy to say a 7-9 team hardly deserves a spot in the playoffs, but don’t think for a minute that’s going to stop the Seahawks from trying to complete the unthinkable. For quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and company the task it monumental, but considering where they are at the moment, it is far from impossible. Step one was completed last week when the Seahawk’s offense blew up for 41 points and knocked of the defending champions (Saints). This week is likely going to take a completely different type of effort; similar to the one they completed some three months ago back in week 6 against these same Chicago Bears. When the Seahawks get set to take the field on Sunday there is no one in this world that can tell them that they can’t go into Soldier Field, stuff the run, pressure quarterback Jay Cutler, and beat the Bears; they have already done that. It’s definitely easier said than done, and even more difficult to do it twice, but there’s no reason to think this upstart bunch from the Northwest won’t come ready on Sunday and believe they can take a second step closer to the ultimate dream of reaching the Super Bowl.

Packers Riding A Feverish Pitch
Just about a month ago it looked very bleak for Head Coach Mike McCarthy and his Packers; after consecutive losses to the Lions and Patriots in week 14 & 15 dropped the team to 8-6 and pushed their backs to the wall. With his quarterback Aaron Rodgers sidelined after suffering from a concussion against the Lions, their post season hopes were very much in doubt. That was about four weeks ago and since, Rodgers has returned to the lineup and led the Packers to three straight wins, including the two over the Giants and Bears needed to make the playoffs. Last week’s win over the Eagles made it very evident how dangerous this team really is; Rodgers finished the season 7th in passing yards (3,922) and his 28 touchdowns were tied for 6th in the league, with a reborn running game that carved out 138 yards on the ground last Sunday they look even more dangerous. The Packers were a pre-season favorite to win their division and go deep in the playoffs. They didn’t win the North (finished second), but they are in the playoffs and look primed to make their run. With a revamped run game, a tenacious defense, Rodgers and company look ready to storm the Georgia Dome and turn the lights out.

Steelers And Ravens Set For Clash of the Titans III
The battles are never pretty and there is never any love lost; for the third time this season the Steelers (ranked number one against the run) and Ravens (defense is ranked 3rd in points allowed; 16.9 per game) will take the field in a quest for gridiron supremacy. The last time these two teams met in the post season, it was quarterback Joe Flacco’s rookie season and the game was one he would like never to remember. Dick LeBeau’s (Steelers DC) defense did a number on Flacco, sacking him three times and forcing three interceptions. Flacco will certainly be hoping for different results this third time around; this being his third season in the league he has grown and should lots of maturity. In his two matchups this season with the Steelers Flacco has completed 41 passes of 70 throws (59%) and tossed two touchdowns with a pick. In the first meeting he was just sacked once, but in their last tilt the Steelers dumped Flacco four times. This matchup promises to be a heavyweight showdown of two terrific defenses (Steelers and Ravens), but if the Ravens have any hopes of survival at Heinz Field on Saturday, they must keep Flacco upright.

Injury News and Updates

The Ravens are getting ready for their big matchup with the Steelers on Saturday, but could have a less than 100 percent Ray Rice. The Ravens running back was seen vomiting at the team’s hotel in Pittsburgh Friday. There’s been no clear updates regarding his status and he was not on the injury report, but it’s still worth keeping an eye on.

The Patriot’s wide receiver Deion Branch (knee) was listed as questionable for the Divisional Round, but that sounds more like Bill Belichick being himself and keeping everyone in the dark. The local media has not given any indication that there’s any reason for concern. Branch has had two weeks to rest and should be ready for Sunday.

According to rookie tight end Aaron Hernandez, he says he ready to play Sunday. Hernandez has been out for the past three weeks with a hip injury, but it sounds like there’s no reason to believe he won’t play. He has played very well against the Jets this season and figures to be a key part of the Patriots passing attack Sunday.

The Seahawks could be without their middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu (concussion) on Sunday as he has yet to be medically cleared to play. With the early game on Sunday his window of opportunity is closing fast and his availability is very much in doubt at this point. His absence in the middle would be a huge loss in the run game for the Seahawks; Tatupu finished second on the team with 88 total tackles.

Just my views.

MY POWER RANKINGS (WILD-CARD WEEKEND)

January 12th, 2011, Wednesday

MY NFL Team Power Rankings
(Thru Week Wild-Card Weekend)

The first round is complete and we are now four fewer participants in the post season. With Seahawks and the Jets winning, every office pool for the playoffs has been greatly changed and we now have four rematches set up for the divisional round.

Both of the number six seeded teams (Packers, Jets) will be returning to the scene of the crime and seeking redemption after losing in their last matchups with their weekend opponents (Falcons, Patriots). For New York it will be the deciding rubber match and one they would like very much so they can forget the Monday Night Massacre they suffered at the hands of Tom Brady and the Patriots.

Green Bay on the other will be returning to the Georgia Dome hoping to do what very few (only two) teams have been able to do over the past several seasons; quarterback Matt Ryan has won 20 of 22 starts at home.

In the other two matchups, the first will be a bruising rematch of two of the league’s top defenses (Steelers-Ravens) with the nastiest reputations, the other contest will feature Cinderella (the Seahawks) trying to crash the Bears ball at Soldier field. In their first matchup this season the Seahawks blew into Chicago like a strong chill and took the wind out of the Bears sails defeating the “Monsters of the Midway” 23-20.

This weekend is all set for some good football amongst the league’s best, rematches, rubber matches, and redemption may be the running theme, but ultimately it’s just about winning. We have reached the quarterfinals and here’s how they rank as we lead into the Divisional round…

The Post Season Pre-Rankings

1. New England Patriots (14-2): The Patriots may not be saying much now, but they have had two weeks to prepare and have to be feeling confident about facing a team they pummeled 45-3 about a month ago.
2. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4): The Steelers are well rested and good news, they should have safety Troy Polamalu available for this weekend’s AFC North showdown with the Ravens.
3. Atlanta Falcons (13-3): The Falcons love the comforts of the Georgia Dome, in particular quarterback Matt Ryan. Ryan is 7-1 this season, with 15 touchdowns, just three picks, and a passer rating of 99.1 at home in 2010.
4. Baltimore Ravens (13-4): The Ravens didn’t say anything with the win over the Chiefs that their opponents have not already seen or heard, but quarterback Joe Flacco will have to play much better than he has in the past if he hopes to win this weekend; Flacco is just 2-4 in his career against the Steelers and has thrown 8 picks on the road this season.
5. Chicago Bears (11-5): The Monsters of the Midway have not been saying much this post season, but you can rest assured they will have plenty say on the field come Sunday. The Bears have used a bone-crushing run defense this season and the arm of quarterback Jay Cutler (23 touchdowns this season) to ride their wave to the post season, but against the Seahawks they may turn to more of an old-school look with a run-heavy offense.
6. New York Jets (12-5): The Jets pulled off an impressive win defeating Peyton Manning and the Colts last weekend, but this Sunday they will face an even more daunting task taking on Tom Brady and company.
7. Green Bay Packers (11-6): The Packers left no doubt last weekend that they are a very dangerous team in the playoffs. With quarterback Aaron Rodgers securing his first career post season win, the cheeseheads are gearing up for what they hope will be the night the lights go out in (the) Georgia (Dome).
8. Seattle Seahawks (8-9): The Seahawks may be the only team under .500 in the playoffs, but already with a victory over their opponents this season, you can’t tell the Bears that they are not dangerous.
9. New Orleans Saints (12-5): The Saints gave it a run, but it was short-lived when their defense decided to vacation early; 41 points allowed to the Seahawks.
10. Philadelphia Eagles (10-7): The Eagles were exposed down the stretch with a shaky ground defense and pass protection issues, but it looks like they found their quarterback (or two) for now
11.Indianapolis Colts (10-7): The Sheriff came up one bullet short and the Colts were sent home packing. A faulty defense and too many mistakes throughout the season made this road a little too tough for even quarterback Peyton Manning.
12. Kansas City Chiefs (10-7): Maybe they weren’t as complete as some thought, but still a great turnaround and great things ahead for Todd Haley and the Chiefs.
